Yangshuo in two days: a plan built around the river
How to use two days in Yangshuo without rushing: arrive by the Li River, sleep in town, and spend the second day on a sectional raft or the countryside.
Two days in Yangshuo works if you let the river do the transport. The mistake is treating the town as a base for everything: arriving overland, fighting the transfers, and then discovering that the one thing you came to see is a four-hour one-way trip that leaves from outside Guilin. Do it in the other order — arrive by water, stay in Yangshuo, and spend the second day on a shorter stretch of the same river — and the two days feel unhurried.
We checked the scenic area's cruise, raft and transport pages plus its official 2024 price list on 1 November 2026. Prices are that published list, not a live quote; timings and booking terms come from the official route notes.
Day 1: arrive by the river
Take the highlight cruise, and treat the four hours on the water as the first half of the day rather than transport between two places. The route runs about 60 km from Mopanshan or Zhujiang pier to Yangshuo, one way, and finishes in Yangshuo in the early afternoon — which is exactly where you want to be for a two-day plan.
Two practicalities decide whether this works. First, there is no luggage storage on board and the boat does not take pets, so you cannot bring the suitcase; send it by road, leave it at your Guilin hotel, or plan to buy what you need. Second, departure times are not published anywhere — they are assigned when you book through the official WeChat service account 「漓江售票处」. Do not build a schedule around a boat you assume leaves at nine.
Book at least a day ahead in peak season, and bring the same document you booked with, because boarding checks that ticket, person and identity match.
Where to sleep on night 1
Sleep in Yangshuo town itself. The boat ends there, the evening is there, and the alternative — racing the return coach back to Guilin on the same day — is the version of this trip that feels like a commute.
Yangshuo's accommodation runs from courtyard guesthouses to larger hotels, and the choice matters mainly for the morning: staying in town means you can walk to breakfast and to the pick-up point for day two, while staying out in the countryside means a taxi before every activity. For a two-night pattern, one night in town is enough; for a slower trip, move out to the villages second.
Day 2: the Yangdi and Xingping section
The second day is where the raft routes come in. The scenic area runs bamboo rafts on defined sections around Yangdi and Chaobanshan: Yangdi to Chaobanshan (CNY 255 on the 2024 list), Yangdi to Mashan (CNY 140), Yangdi to Laocuntou (CNY 170), and Chaobanshan to Jiiuma Huashan (CNY 140). The names matter because the price buys a specific stretch, not a general river ticket.
The other documented route is the Xingping side: a round trip from Xingping to Yucun at CNY 115 on the same list, with a published local link from Xingping high-speed rail station to Xingping pier. That makes a Yangshuo day two possible without returning to Guilin — and it also gives you a way to reach the river section from outside town.
Whichever you choose, the pattern is the same: a short trip on the water, then the rest of the day on land. Save the town and the countryside for the afternoon, and keep the boat for the morning while the light is still side-on and the water is calm.
The afternoon problem
The hard part of a two-day plan is not the river; it is the hours after it. Yangshuo's town is pleasant but small, and the surrounding countryside is where the day actually opens up — lanes between the peaks, fields, villages, and a pace that rewards walking or cycling rather than another ticketed attraction.
The workable pattern is to pick one direction and commit to it rather than trying to cover the whole valley. Ride out in the late afternoon when the light softens, stop for a drink where the road meets the river, and come back before dark. The alternative — a taxi between viewpoints — is faster and gives you less.
The smaller Yulong River near town is the usual local answer for a second water experience, but we have not verified its current operator details, so treat it as a question to ask at your guesthouse rather than something this page can confirm. What we can say is that Yangshuo rewards fewer, slower activities: two days of river plus one afternoon of countryside beats four ticketed stops.
Food and evenings
Yangshuo eats early and casually. The town's main street is the obvious strip, with a mix of local dishes and food aimed at visitors; the better meals are usually one lane back, where the menu is shorter and the prices are lower. Beer fish — the local river fish cooked in a broth — is the dish the region is known for, and it is worth ordering once.
Evenings are the town's strength: the lanes fill, the lights come on, and there is no reason to book anything. If you want quiet, stay on the edge of town and walk in; if you want the noise, stay in the middle.
Getting there and away
Arriving by river is the point of this plan, but the overland options matter for the return. From Yangshuo, the official return coach runs twice in the mid-afternoon to the Guilin piers; beyond that, the station and the bus terminal are your fallback, and both need to be arranged before the day you leave rather than on the morning.
Do not treat the return as something to solve later. The single most common way this two-day plan goes wrong is a mid-afternoon boat, a late lunch, and the discovery that the coach left at 16:10 without you.
What not to try to fit
Two days invites a list, and the list is usually what ruins the trip. The things that do not fit into this plan are the ones that need a full day or a different base: the Longji terraces are the obvious one, and adding them turns a relaxed two days into six hours of mountain road. The other trap is trying to see the cruise, a raft, the countryside and a cave in the same 48 hours; each is half a day once you count the transfer, and the maths does not work.
The version of Yangshuo that people remember is the one with space in it: one long morning on the water, one slow afternoon in the lanes and fields, one evening in town. If a plan has more than two ticketed things per day, cut one.
If you have a single day
Skip the cruise. Base yourself in Yangshuo, book a sectional raft, and accept that you will see one stretch of the river rather than the whole route. You lose the end-to-end run and gain four hours — which is the entire point of a one-day version.
If you are coming from Guilin and must return the same day, the return coach at 14:50 or 16:10 is the constraint, not the raft. Work backwards from it.
What most guides don't tell you
- The Li River highlight cruise is one-way: about 60 km from Mopanshan or Zhujiang pier to Yangshuo in roughly four hours, and you disembark in Yangshuo with no boat back.
- The official return coach from Yangshuo Longtoushan pier runs twice, at 14:50 and 16:10, to Mopanshan and Zhujiang piers. If your plan depends on it, the boat's arrival time decides whether it works.
- The cruise has no luggage storage and does not take pets, so the two-day version works if you carry a day bag and send the suitcase by road or leave it in Guilin.
- Departure times are not published; they are assigned when you book through the official WeChat service account, so a fixed 09:00 start cannot be assumed.
- The 2024 official raft fares are section-specific — Yangdi–Chaobanshan CNY 255, Yangdi–Mashan CNY 140, Yangdi–Laocuntou CNY 170, Chaobanshan–Jiiuma Huashan CNY 140 — and the price you see is for a particular stretch, not the whole river.
- The scenic area publishes a link from Xingping high-speed rail station to Xingping pier, which makes the Xingping section reachable without going back through Guilin.
Questions
Is two days in Yangshuo enough?
For the river and the countryside, yes. Arrive by the Li River on day one, sleep in Yangshuo, and use day two for a sectional raft or a slow loop through the villages. Two days is not enough to add Longji and the terraces.
Should I take the cruise from Guilin or a raft from Yangdi?
The cruise is the one-way four-hour run from Guilin to Yangshuo and doubles as transport. The rafts are shorter sectional trips around Yangdi and Chaobanshan that return you to the same pier. If you need to get to Yangshuo, take the cruise.
How do I get back to Guilin from Yangshuo?
The official return coach leaves Yangshuo Longtoushan pier at 14:50 and 16:10 for Mopanshan and Zhujiang piers. Outside those two runs, the return is your own arrangement — bus, train or a booked car.
Do I need to book the river ahead?
Yes in peak season. The official route notes say to book at least one day ahead, and tickets are real-name, so bring the document you booked with.
Can I bring my suitcase on the boat?
No — there is no luggage storage on board and the cruise is one-way. Carry a day bag and move the suitcase separately, or leave it at your Guilin hotel.
What if it rains?
The river still runs, but the views change and the boats can be delayed. Keep day two flexible: the countryside and the town work in light rain, the river does not work in heavy rain.
